Epithelial ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death from gynecologic cancer in the U.S. and the fifth most common cause of cancer mortality in U.S. women.
Tests generally appear in the order most useful for common clinical situations
Test name: Cancer Antigen 125
ARUP #: 0080462
Methodology: Quantitative Electrochemiluminescent Immunoassay
Use: Do not use to diagnose ovarian cancer Monitor patient response to treatment Adjunct in distinguishing benign from malignant pelvic masses, particularly in postmenopausal women Also useful for early detection of ovarian cancer in high-risk hereditary syndromes (eg, BRCA1 and BRCA2)
Limitations: Not recommended for general population screening for ovarian cancer Elevated in other gynecological conditions Combine with HE4 testing to reduce false positives
Test name: Human Epididymis Protein 4 (HE4)
ARUP #: 2003020
Methodology: Quantitative Enzyme Immunoassay
Use: Testing and monitoring for epithelial cell tumors in combination with CA 125 testing
